Why is St. Gerard the Patron Saint of expectant mothers, childbirth, unborn children and infertility. Read the story below and pray the novena

St. Gerard and the Pirofalo family

As St. Gerard was nearing the end of his life, while visiting friends in Oliveto Citra, Italy, St. Gerard left his handkerchief while leaving the home of the Pirofalo family. One of the daughters of the family ran after him to return the handkerchief he had forgotten. Gerard, with prophetic insight, told her to keep it, saying "Keep it. It will be useful to you some day".

The Miracle

Some years later, this same daughter was in utmost danger of death during childbirth. She remembered the handkerchief and asked that it be placed on her. As the handkerchief was placed on her, the danger immediately passed, and she delivered a healthy child.

Following this event, and others where he assisted mothers, St. Gerard became known as the saint of happy childbirth.

Novena Prayers

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

O great Saint Gerard, beloved servant of Jesus Christ, perfect imitator of your meek and humble Savior, and devoted child of the Mother of God, enkindle in my heart one spark of that heavenly fire of charity which glowed in your heart and made you an angel of love.

O glorious Saint Gerard, because when falsely accused of crime, you did bear, like your Divine Master, without murmur or complaint, the calumnies of wicked men, you have been raised up by God as the patron and protector of expectant mothers.

Preserve me from danger and from the excessive pains accompanying childbirth, and shield the child which I now carry, that it may see the light of day and receive the purifying and life-giving waters of baptism through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
