Saint Anne (also Anna) is venerated in Christian tradition as the mother of the Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus, though she is not mentioned in the Bible. She was the wife of St. Joachim, and together they are celebrated on July 26. 

Tradition states she was born in Bethlehem, married Joachim, and for many years was childless, praying for a child to dedicate to God. An angel appeared to her to promise a child, leading to the birth of Mary. The name Anne derives from the Hebrew Hannah, meaning "grace" or "favour".

St. Anne is considered the patron saint of mothers, women in labour, childless couples, and grandparents. She is often depicted in art holding the infant Virgin Mary, or with Mary and the child Jesus. While not in scripture, she is a deeply revered figure in Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican traditions, with her life symbolizing devotion and trust in God.

Novena Prayer 

Good St Anne, you were granted favour with the Lord to carry the most Holy Virgin Mary inside your womb. You know my deep desire for a child: a little one to love, to hold, to care for, and to cherish.

Grant that my body may conceive and give birth to a beautiful, healthy baby in God’s holy image. Guide me in all my choices so that this conception, my pregnancy and my baby’s birth are in line with God’s will. 

St Anne and Holy Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandmother of Our Lord Jesus, pray for me.
